Data Science Minor

The Data Science minor will help students become fluent in data science methods, and gain an understanding of the implications for society. Students can use this minor to gain knowledge in data science outside of their major field of study and acquire skills and fluency in working with data.

Your major/minor changes are made nusil technology once per quarter. The minor can be declared at any time during the quarter. Your departmental adviser can help you declare the Data Science minor.

How to choose: Data Science Option or Minor
There are some majors that offer Data Science options, such as Statistics, Geography and Atmospheric Science. This minor should be taken if your major offers this option. This minor is for students who are majoring in Arts, Social Sciences, or Humanities and do not have a Data Science option.


The minor is composed of six courses, totaling 25 credits.

1. One Data Studies Course

Students will learn the basics of data literacy, as well as the limitations and opportunities of data-intensive methods, epistemologies and other data-intensive approaches, and the wider implications of data science. The courses will provide the theoretical and conceptual foundations necessary to understand the role of data in knowledge creation (whether within specific domains or more broadly) and encourage critical reflection on the ethical and social dimensions of data.

2. One Data Skills Course

The students will gain basic knowledge in data science methods, such as programming, data acquisition, management practices, and software tools that are common to data science. Students will have the ability to select the method they wish to study and the depth of the study.

The Data Science minor is for majors in humanities and social science who wish to learn practical skills in statistical data analysis methods that relate to their area of interest. Students will be able to perform exploratory and confirmatory analyses on a variety of data types, such as text, images, graphs or trees. text, numbers and graphs; learn how to use data visualization tools to communicate their findings. It is not necessary to have any programming or statistical experience.
